| Shirley joined BMR in
the late 1950's and is now a gold card member. She has paraded
and gone on trail rides with the club and was a 100% member until
she and her husband started spending the winters in Arizona.
She rode in gymkhanas in the 50's, and competed in Washington State
Barrel Racing in the 60's, picking up a couple of saddles along the
way. After 10 years as a 4-H leader she began showing
seriously in Open and Paint Horse Shows. In the middle 90's
she sold her show horse and she and her husband went on the road
with the National Senior Pro Rodeo Assoc. They shared a sorrel
Quarter Horse. Shirley barrel raced and her husband was a
header. They
now compete in the Northwest Old Timers.
Shirley is best known for her pastel portraits
of horses, dogs, and other animals, which have been commissioned
from throughout the west. Many BMR members have Shirley's
portraits in their homes. She does many high score awards
during the year, including those for the American Paint Horse Assoc.
Youth Awards, Paint Horse Zone 1 Year End Awards, and Washington
Quarter Horse Assoc. Awards.
